# Moving from Buy

> What a move copies into Manage, what stays on the original deal, and how to retry missing files.

Moving a property from the Deal Pipeline creates a managed property. It does not remove the deal from Buy. Messages, the original files, and the pipeline card stay where they were.

<Info>
  **Key things to know**

  * The move copies the property, a default unit, calculator loans, and tax and insurance estimates.
  * Property attachments are copied into Documents as independent files, first categorized as **Other**.
  * Files that exist only inside a message are not copied.
  * Deleting a Manage copy does not delete the Buy original.
</Info>

How to start the move is in [Getting properties in](/manage/getting-properties-in). This page is what happens after you click **Move**.

## What the move copies

| Comes into Manage | Stays only in Buy |
| - | - |
| Address and property details | The pipeline card, its stage, and its owner |
| **Purchase Price** and **Purchase Date** you enter at move time | The original calculator inputs, until you open Financing again from the managed card |
| A default unit | Message threads. Open them from a linked contact. They are not relocated. |
| Loans from the deal's financing | Files attached only to a conversation |
| Tax and insurance estimates from the deal | The original attachment on the Buy property |
| Property attachments, as separate copies | Quote and contract links on the Buy deal |

Copying a file does not turn it into a lease, an expense, or a loan payment. Estimates are starting values. Confirm buying cost and record real payments in [Financials](/manage/financials) before they count as money spent.

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Loans and estimates">
    Financing on the Buy deal is copied into Manage loans. Tax and insurance figures from the deal are copied as estimates. Open the **Loans**, **Taxes**, and **Insurance** tabs in Portfolio and correct anything that was a projection.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Files">
    Each property attachment is copied into Documents and starts as **Other**. You can rename it, change the category, and add notes. Those edits stay in Manage. The Buy file is untouched.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Conversations">
    The thread stays on the Buy deal. The Manage card shows the same linked contact, and clicking the name opens Messages in a new tab. It does not send a message, and it does not move the thread.
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

## Contacts

The Manage property card shows two kinds of contacts:

* Contacts already linked to the original Buy deal.
* Contacts you attach directly to the managed property, including a carrier, a warranty contact, or a lender.

An explicit contact on the managed property takes priority. Opening the card does not copy the conversation and does not pick a contact by matching the address or the person's name.

<Tip>
  Older cards can still show a contact that was linked before the move, even when the managed record itself looks empty. If that original link was never saved, add the contact again. Manage will not guess.
</Tip>

## Attachments after the move

New moves start copying property attachments on their own. Files copy in batches. Keep the page open until copying finishes. Closing it can stop the remaining files. The property is still moved if a file fails.

For an earlier move, an interrupted copy, or a Manage copy you deleted and want back:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Copy BUY attachments">
    On Dashboard, Financials, Portfolio, or Documents, click **Import**, then **Copy BUY attachments**. The description says it creates independent copies and leaves the originals in Buy.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the property">
    Select the managed property that came from Buy.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Copy">
    Click **Copy attachments**. While it runs, the button reads **Copying...**. Files already copied are skipped, including ones you renamed or recategorized in Manage.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Retry what failed">
    Failed names stay listed. The button becomes **Retry copy**. Completed copies are kept. A result of nothing new to copy means every eligible file is already in Documents.
  </Step>
</Steps>

**Retry copy** can restore a Manage copy you deleted on purpose. It is not a live sync. Later edits in Buy do not flow into Manage, and edits in Manage do not change the Buy file.

The same files also appear in the **Documents** section on the property card's **Info** tab. Opening, uploading, or deleting there updates the vault, and the other way around. See [Documents](/manage/documents).

  <Accordion title="The move said it failed, but I see the property">
    Storage can time out after the property, unit, and loans are already saved. Do not add the address a second time. Open Portfolio, confirm the row, then run **Copy BUY attachments** for any missing files.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="A contract on the deal is missing in Manage">
    Only files attached to the property are copied. A file that lives only inside a message thread is left behind. Attach it to the Buy property first, or upload it in Manage with **Save a file**.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="I deleted the Manage copy and want it back">
    **Copy BUY attachments** will copy it again. It skips files that are still in Manage, and it restores one you removed. The Buy original was never deleted.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Will Buy and Manage stay in sync?">
    No. After the copy, they are separate. Change a category in Documents, or delete a Manage file, and the pipeline attachment stays as it was.
  </Accordion>

<Warning>
  Independent copies use storage. A large deal with many attachments copies each file again. Deleting the Manage copy frees the Manage file only.
